Mythology, for her, is alive. “In the same way a language is alive I can feel mythology quietly breathing in the hills and rocks, waiting for us. Right now these stories feel like a lifeline into a future where humans survive in harmony with Mother Earth.”

About the Artist:
Spiritual ecology re-imagined
Maya's always had a love of drawing from when she could first hold a pencil.
"People would ask me if I wanted to be an artist when I grew up and I would defiantly tell them I already am an artist!"
Now she spends her time painting in her tiny studio, mixing her own paints and crafting an art practice that feels gritty yet fantastical.
Or at least that's when she's not gardening, as a self proclaimed gardening addict Maya's art naturally mirrors the balance of her own life and centres itself around the natural world and our relationship to it, often depicted through mythology and symbolism.
I pay my respects to the Dja Dja Wurrung and acknowledge the traditional custodians of this sacred area of Central Victoria and pay my respect to elders, past present and emerging. I am forever grateful to create art on Djarra Country, I endeavour to learn all I can.
Always was always will be aboriginal land.
