This mural changed me!

I am so proud of this mural which now lights up the entry way of Oshun yoga studio, but creating it was like a big fat injection of 'Trust the process' from the universe. I worked closely with Kira, the owner and founder of Oshun for the design and together we created an unique drawing of Ganesha the elephant-headed Hindu god of wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings. Oshun already had this gorgeous muted but earthy colour scape and we wanted the mural to blend in seamlessly with the studio's aesthetic.

Kira and her small team were amazing to work with, I feel so honoured that they trusted me with the wall.

We perfected the design, I mixed all my colours and then it was in my hands to bring the the mural to life! But colours are everything in murals and my first pass of the design was ever so slightly off, I found myself half way through, super unhappy with the way the mural sat in the space and I proceeded to have a mini creative crises. I was so worried the deign (which actually looked amazing) just wasn't going to fit the studio and I wanted it to be perfect. I'm so not proud of this and it seems crazy in retrospect, but I texted Kira and offered to paint over it.

I know! What on earth was I thinking? I would never pull such a stunt now and I know this totally upended that balance of client communication being both compassionate and honest but also professional. Kira being the lovely and patient person she is simply told me she loved the design and we should keep going.

Of course she was right, I corrected the colours, changed the border, finished the line-work and did the biggest sigh of relief because the mural came together like you wouldn't believe and finally looked like it belonged in the space. I'm so proud of myself for coming out the other side of the creative process!

There's so many ways this mural has changed me and taught me some invaluable lessons: That communication and organisation simply can't be overlooked as part of my little business and that if the design is perfect, it pays to trust your own process.

Ultimately as a muralist, every job is different and every single time I find myself learning something on the job, but this is also exactly why I love it! So a huge thank you for the team at Oshun yoga, their little studio is the most tranquil space, I truly recommend them if you're Melbourne based and looking for a nourishing yoga class.
